The Kunstverein Arnsberg is pleased to present the exhibition \"The Hygienic Colours\" by Alexej Meschtschanow.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Color is not as important in sculpture as it is in painting, but it can sharpen, caress or disturb the form, depending on the call. Often, a choice of color is associated with style and taste and thus determines not only the surface but also the character of its subject. The theme inspires Meschtschanow to create a new series of sculptures in which his research into new forms and functions is extended with colors. The series of neon lights is not based on found objects, as is usual for Meschtschanow's work, but is a new production of its own: from the design and electrics to the engraved \"Meschtschanow\" label. To this end, he develops a color scale that does not represent \"hygienically pure\" colors, but rather a feeling, an impression or an event from colorful everyday life.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Representation and functionality are central questions in Meschtschanow's artistic practice. In his exhibition, we still find everyday objects that lose their original function in favor of a different aesthetic through additions, extensions or even new constructions. At the point where the function dissolves, the work gains emotionality and character. At the same time, this is also to be understood as a disruption of a symbolic order, the aim of which can also be to create a different, higher order.

Alexej Meschtschanow was born in 1973 in Kiev and lives in Berlin and Leipzig. His recent exhibition venues include Art Biesenthal (2010), Kunstverein Leipzig (2009), Galerie f\u00fcr Zeitgen\u00f6ssische Kunst Leipzig (2009), Zabludowicz Collection London (2008). His first institutional solo show was at the Folkwangmuseum Essen (2004). <\/p>\n\n\n\n
