The solo exhibition Standard_Deviation by\nRana Hamadeh from 05 May - 18 June 2023\nis the second chapter within the three-part\nproject The theater in each*one of us (17 Feb\n\u2013 30 Jun 2023), in which Kunstverein Arnsberg\nexplores and investigates how processes and\nspaces of theater find a form in visual art and\nin our everyday life.\nThe exhibition features Hamadeh\u2018s 3-D animated\nfilm installation Standard_Deviation\n(2021-continuing); a 22-minute looped projection\naccompanied by an immersive and cacophonous\nsound and media installation. In the\nother four rooms of KV Arnsberg, Hamadeh\npresents new studies for a series of cartographic\noffshoots of the animated film. These\ntrace the narrative, poetic and scenographic\nlayers of the exhibited film, and not only enable\na different way of engaging with its content,\nbut also transform its densely coded images,\nspaces and motifs into autonomous actors that\nbecome independent from the film\u2018s montage.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Rana Hamadeh\u2018s practice blurs the boundaries\nbetween art, theater, and exhibition making.\nHer works, often produced over a period of\nyears, develop in successive chapters and manifest\nas large-scale sound compositions with\ncomplex network designs and mechanic interactions,\naudio-visual installations, cartographic\nworks, texts, and pedagogical setups.\nHer works generally think through the infrastructures\nand technologies of justice \u2013 linguistic,\nlegal and performative \u2013 understanding\njustice through the modalities of spectacle. For\nThe theater in each one of us, KV Arnsberg\nwas particularly interested in Hamadeh\u2018s artistic\nunderstanding of theater as a form. In her series Standard_Deviation, the artist\nventures through Sophocles\u2019 famed tragedy,\nOedipus Rex.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In ihrer Serie Standard_Deviation<\/em> unternimmt Hamadeh einen Exkurs durch Sophokles\u2018 ber\u00fchmte Trag\u00f6die \u00d6dipus Rex. Die Arbeit bietet keine Nacherz\u00e4hlung des ersch\u00fctternden Ungl\u00fccks von \u00d6dipus, dem K\u00f6nig von Theben, dessen schwere Reise sich auf dem H\u00f6hepunkt\u2028des Schwarzen Todes, – der Pest abspielt. Sie bietet Lesarten von Sophokles\u2018 St\u00fcck selbst an und dessen Darstellung der Trag\u00f6die als \u201eMaschine und Technologie des Aushaltens\u201c. Diese Edition des Films im KV Arnsberg wurde in Zusammenarbeit mit Sara Hamadeh realisiert.\u2028Mit seinem unheimlichen visuellen und akustischen Geflecht zeichnet der Film die Leidenswege und die emotionalen Abgr\u00fcnde nach, die sich in der urspr\u00fcnglichen Trag\u00f6die entfalten. Er folgt den H\u00f6hen und Tiefen, der Anspannung und Unruhen, seiner Dramatik, der Figurenabfolge und den psychologischen Verstrickungen.
From dreams to trance to horror to phantasmagorical tableaux vivants, the visuals are mainly reminiscent of cut scenes in a computer game. The scenarios are as dreamlike as they are menacing, while the action is driven by gears, prosthetics and viscera.
Constantly mutating figures such as the leg,\nthe shrimp, the log chairs, the paper airplane,\nand the traffic cone wander through sets\ninspired by anatomy theaters. Constantly, one\ntheater unfolds from another. The jugglery of\nfantastic images is accompanied by a cacophonous\nand disorienting six-channel composition,\nspatialized for the exhibition. The sound intensifies.\nLenticular prints and simple stereoscopic\nviewing apparatuses showing successive\nscenes from the video contrast the technical\nand mediational nature of the audio-visual\ninstallation. Similarly, a map of the film\u2019s digital\ninfrastructure allows the viewer to access the\nfilm through the backstage of its digital materiality.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

From Hamadeh\u2018s reading of Sophocles\u2018 tragedy\narise topical questions about the entanglements\nof desire, destiny, technology and the\neconomies of reproduction. In an endeavour\nto think of what constitutes a contemporary\ntragedy, Hamadeh asks how \u2013 in a hyper-mediated\nsocial reality \u2013 can we \u2018desire differently\u2019?\nAnd what technologies can we devise to\nmediate such a desire to \u2018desire differently\u2019?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u2028Rana Hamadeh<\/strong> lebt und arbeitet in Rotterdam. Einige ihrer j\u00fcngsten Einzelausstellungen waren 2022 Edith Russ Haus, Oldenburg, 2021 Wiener Secession; 2019 Kunsthalle Winterthur; 2017 Witte de With Center for Contemporary Art (momentan Kunstinstituut Melly), Rotterdam; 2016 The Showroom, London; 2015 Nottingham Contemporary. Im Jahr 2017 wurde sie mit dem niederl\u00e4ndischen Prix de Rome ausgezeichnet. 2021 war sie Preistr\u00e4gerin des Stipendiums der Nieders\u00e4chsischen Stiftung f\u00fcr Medienkunst am Edith-Russ-Haus.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
