The young Kunstverein Arnsberg is 30 years old. With the start of the program in 1988, the Kunstverein Arnsberg set itself the task of activating the cultural life of the region with contemporary art. The aim of acting discursively and not only following follow trends, but also to drive them forward, has always been the guiding principle. The promotion of young art and the willingness to take risks and embark on uncertain paths has shaped the character of the art association.

Today, the 30-year-old Kunstverein Arnsberg is in its prime, experienced and still full of passion for art. With this anniversary exhibition, we are celebrating 30 important years of art for Arnsberg and are recording some of the events and milestones. However, the exhibition is not intended as a melancholy retrospective, but as a look to the future. Virtual reality and augmented reality open up new visual art worlds that combine artistic imagination with innovative technologies. Visitors to the exhibition will not only learn about the history of the Kunstverein, but also experience a touch of the future.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Rudolph is one of the pioneers of combining painting with augmented reality. This combination is so technically new that it has neither an official description nor an art-historical categorisation. In a kind of AR painting or augmented painting, Rudolph combines his classic oil painting with virtual 3D painting and superimposes immaterial phenomena onto his material images. This virtual painting is created through immersion in virtual space with VR glasses. Rudolph paints with brush and palette, but also in the digital space of virtual reality.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Augmented reality, mixed reality or \u2018augmented reality\u2019 can thus breathe new life into classic images and expand them into the three-dimensional in a sculptural or performative way. The resulting hybrid of oil painting and VR painting can only be perceived with the Hololens glasses, which enable this blending through augmented reality, i.e. by mixing the real and the virtual.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The works in the presentation originally stem from the virtual development of Rudolph's project \u2018The Portal\u2019, a gateway intended to mark the threshold of Western civilisation in the Californian desert. Rudolph showed \u2018The Portal TV\u2019 at Lichthaus Arnsberg in 2015 and this year realised the project in a dramatic AR opera in seven acts, which is now being performed in individual scenes at Kunstverein Arnsberg.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Rudolph's installation will take place as part of the anniversary exhibition \u2018Seinerzeit\u2019, which will be extended until 28 October.
